Strict security measures have been introduced in Austria in the fight against the corona virus. Those who do not follow the rules must expect severe penalties. Could they even face prison?

Our partner Wolfgang Schubert says: “Yes, that is quite possible! Whoever violates legally ordered security measures (including, of course, an ordered quarantine) is not only committing an administrative offence and may be fined up to € 3,600. If someone endangers other people by disregarding the security measures, which is easily possible due to the measures that have been published hundreds of times in the meantime, he/she can also end up in prison for up to three years. The basis for this are the paragraphs 178 and 179 of our penal code (intentional or even negligent endangerment of people by communicable diseases). Therefore: please keep strictly to all security measures and stay healthy - and in freedom.”
